The Cathay building not only had Cathay cinema which was one of the cinemas we would frequent for movies but also a Chinese restaurant upstairs. I don't recall the name but we went there for birthday parties. I watched movies like James Bond, Herbie Goes Bananas at Cathay ☺️ my parents or grandparents would bring my sister and me. Tickets were either stall or circle and only cost like $3.50 or $4.50 a ticket.
My grandparents once bought only a ticket for my sister and me to share a seat! Surprisingly, they allowed that! 😅 Of course, I don't think it happened many times after cos it ended up with 2 squirmy kids getting on each other's nerves, and disturbing my grandparents too. Hehehe... I'm sure we complained to them.
The Cathay restaurant was where my grandparents held their milestone birthday parties... I don't remember how many tables were booked but there were plenty of relatives & friends... it would be a sit-down full course dinner, and they would have a cake cutting ceremony... and there was live music! There was a small raised platform area where the band was, and at such parties there would be live music and people would actually dance! Something I've not seen happen in a very long time!
My husband and I went on our first date in October 1995 and we watched "Pulp Fiction" at the Cathay cinema. I still remember sharing a cup of orange juice from Orange Julius that was at the entrance of the cinema. After the movie, we had dinner at KFC that was also located in the same building.
